I believe that this is the best ethical theory that we have discussed in class, because it deals with happiness. Utilitarianism is a monistic ethical theory with just one ultimate value, which is the maximus of happiness.
A Comparison Between Act Utilitarianism and Rule Utilitarianism
Each person desires his own happiness. Therefore each individual ought to aim at his happiness. I feel that. Utilitarianism: Bentham VS. Utilitarianism is a normative theory that describes how one ought to act by evaluating the consequences of actions, thus utilitarianism is a breed of consequentialism. Consequences determine whether an act is right or wrong, so one ought to act to produce the best results. The best result is the one that maximizes utility, or produces the largest amount of good. Utilitarians define good as pleasure or happiness, since it is the only thing that is intrinsically good.
This is not to say that utilitarians. Utilitarianism vs. Individualism Arguments for utilitarianism and individualism will never end. The essence of utilitarianism, pleasure is the chief end of life and the greatest happiness for the greatest number should be the ultimate goal of human beings, has always been a crucial matter of concern and controversy.
However, individualism is deemed as an ignorance of teamwork. We cannot simply tell which one is superior to the. According to the greatest happiness principle, actions that promote overall happiness and pleasure are considered as right practices. Moreover, to Mill, actions which enhance happiness are morally right, on the other hand, actions that produce undesirable and unhappy outcomes are considered as morally wrong. From this point of view we can deduct that utilitarianism assign us moral duties and variety. He is not the first to do so. There have been many philosophers who have taking up the topic of utilitarianism, but one that defines the quality of pleasures along with defining that there are actions behind picking those pleasures would be John Stuart Mill.
Mill in his years of talking and discussing utilitarianism disagreed and agreed with philosophers and had a model. In this essay the following questions pertaining to quality of pleasure, what is utilitarianism, and principle of utility will be discussed. If we were to analyze Utilitarianism closely, we would realize that they do not put any values on human life. In the Utilitarian point of view, every human life is worth the same.

In applying the greatest happiness principle to actions and situations, it considers the implications for utility if the action were taken to establish a rule. Thus, an action that might be sanctioned by act utilitarianism because of its immediate impacts could be impermissible by the standards of a rule utilitarian. Consider, as an example, the classic ethical dilemma of an out-of-control trolley.
There are five people on the track ahead of it, about to be killed, and you are standing off to the side with another bystander. The only way to save the five people is to push the person next to you in front of the train. What do you do? The prototypical act utilitarian would push the bystander, because five lives are greater than one. In contrast, the prototypical rule utilitarian would not push the bystander, because such an action would effectively endorse murder, which would produce far more lasting pain than the pain of the death of five people.
So we see that the two ethical views, while operating on the same basic principle, draw opposing ethical conclusions based on the ways in which that principle is applied. Two further points are worth noting about rule utilitarianism. The first is that, while utilitarianism is touted by many as the paragon of consequentialist ethics, rule utilitarianism looks a lot like a deontological ethical stands inasmuch as it universalizes the action under analysis in order to judge its ethical quality.
This method is similar to Kant's categorical imperative; yet we must be aware that this is a seeming similarity only: Kant's categorical imperative turns on the a priori concern of logical consistency, whereas the universalization that rule utilitarianism employs is still ultimately concerned with a posteriori consequences of actions. The second point is that, though act utilitarianism is easier to grasp on a first reading, it is more likely that Mill had rule utilitarianism in mind in his treatise. People who seek medical treatment must have a high degree of trust in doctors. If they had to worry that doctors might use their organs to help other patients, they would not, for example, allow doctors to anesthetize them for surgery because the resulting loss of consciousness would make them completely vulnerable and unable to defend themselves.
Thus, the rule that allows doctors to kill one patient to save five would not maximize utility. The same reasoning applies equally to the case of the judge. In order to have a criminal justice system that protects people from being harmed by others, we authorize judges and other officials to impose serious punishments on people who are convicted of crimes. The purpose of this is to provide overall security to people in their jurisdiction, but this requires that criminal justice officials only have the authority to impose arrest and imprisonment on people who are actually believed to be guilty.
They do not have the authority to do whatever they think will lead to the best results in particular cases.
