Thus, individuals at level one prefer black and white thinking, but can comprehend grey statements, arguments, and approaches. Many, perhaps most, people either reject grey thinking or transform it into a black or white category. Some, however, increase their use grey, and move to level two.
Stage One: The Unreflective Thinker - Are You an Unreflective Thinker?
At first, the shades of grey are almost black or white, as people see that parts of a given concept might be black or white, but other aspects are not. Gradually people see more and more things as mostly grey. Level 4 Thinker - At the third level of complex thinking, "grey" thinking has become the preferred approach. Think of a "black and white" photograph or movie.
There is actually very little black or white. That is true of thinking at this level, too. The difference between thinking at this level and that at level one is similar to the contrast between those photographs or movies, with their rich imagery, and the simple black and white of a printed page.
Grey thinkers utilize any of multiple approaches to any issue, concept, or thought. They are comfortable with seeing and weighing different points-of-view. They have become much more independent of external opinion and conformity with unquestioned assumptions.

Level 5 Thinker - At level four, black and white have disappeared. These people recognize that there are few absolutes. They prefer the kinds of abstract thought that they have been perfecting since they began thinking in grey.
While they retain the ability to think in the styles of the lower levels, they rarely do. How do I incorporate critical thinking into my course overall and into my daily classes? Getting students to think critically about material requires you to develop habits of repeatedly demonstrating your own processes in class, and perhaps giving them time to practice similar processes.
Start with your syllabus and then develop bigger-questions based on each learning objective. What is it that you find interesting or important or exciting about the material encompassed in each objective? Make your questions open-ended not yes or no so that students will have opportunities to discuss their own ideas and where those ideas come from. The Socratic style of questioning also encourages critical thinking.

Socratic questioning is most frequently employed in the form of scheduled discussions about assigned material, but it can be used on a daily basis by incorporating the questioning process into your daily interactions with students.
